Its History.
¤ - The Isle of Martinique called formerly Madiana, Madinina, was discovered into 1502 by Christophe Colomb at the time of his fourth voyage. ¤ - The
Isle of Martinique is colonized into 1635 by Pierre Belain d'Esnambuc on the command of the Company
of the West Indies of America. Attached later to the royal crown, this Island is since, French Ground.
Its richness " of island with sugar and rum " has excited much covetousness. It was occupied by English under the revolution. Since 1946, Martinique Island enjoys the statute of French Department (97-2).
Its Geography.
¤ - This Island is located at the North of South America, in
the archipelago of the Lesser Antilles with 14°37N and 61°03W. The area of 1080 Km² with in the east the Atlantic Ocean, in the west the Caribbean Sea or West Indies Sea, in north the Channel of the Dominica
and the south the Channel of Sainte-Lucie, it enjoys a tropical climate very refreshed
by the trade winds. Two seasons are distinguished: the dries season from January to May/June " the Lent",
the wet season from July to December " the Wintering ".
¤ - The Isle of Martinique is bordered by two independent English islands. In north The Dominica, in the south
Sainte-Lucie. ¤ - An enumeration of the string of islands from which
formed part The Isle of Martinique gives in the order: Towards the nord: Dominica, The Isle
of Guadeloupe, The Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic/Haïti Republic, Jamaica, Cuba.
Towards the sud: Sainte-Lucie, Saint Vincent, Grenade, Tobago, Trinidad, Curaçao,
Aruba.
